Spiritual Core Strength

The term “core strength” is commonly used in physical training. Core strength supports our spine and gives us a sense of balance. Developing core strength is essential to perform well in sports, especially those that require a high level of balance. Back when I was on my secondary school’s gymnastics team, having core strength allowed me to stand on my hands, do flips and execute challenging poses. Now when I play polo, my core strength helps me to keep my balance on the horse and even lean out to hit the ball. This core strength is also key when I’m skiing.

To develop core strength, we need to work on muscles that are not easily seen by others. It involves training not just our abdominal muscles, but also our back, glutes and the entire spinal region. These muscles help to support our spine so the burden of supporting our body weight doesn’t rest solely on our bones. The result is maximum stability.

But what’s even more important than physical core strength is spiritual core strength. So that when we experience spiritual warfare or unforeseen situations, we stay spiritually stable and anchored in Christ. Like our physical core, our spiritual core also calls for the development of inner qualities like faith in the midst of uncertainty, joy in the midst of suffering and peace in the midst of turmoil. These qualities come through being disciplined in the study of God’s word, committed to prayer and fasting, faithful in evangelising and making disciples, and finally, remaining motivated as we engage in the daily chores of life.

As Ken Costa, a great marketplace leader, once said, “Strengthen the core and the chores will become bearable.”

My prayer for all of you is that God will increase your spiritual core strength. “I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being”. (Ephesians 3:16)
