We Need To Protect Marriage

Greetings from sunny Cape Town, South Africa! Senior Pastor Lawrence and I are attending a Global Forum on Marriage called “One Man, One Woman: Unity in Diversity” together with two other couples from TOUCH Community Services over this weekend.

Marriage is the foundational relationship that forms our society. Although marriage is a personal celebration of the union of one man and one woman, it is also a relationship of great public significance. When a man and a woman commit to join their lives together, they form the key unit of society – family!

The family was God’s first institution. In the beginning, God created man and woman and joined them together for life. He said in Genesis 2:24, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” This passage documents how God instituted the marriage relationship and ordained the family unit. And later in the Word, it’s explained that God’s plan and passion for marriage is One Man, One Woman – for Life (Malachi 2:13-16)!

The downfall of the family unit in present society is one of the most tragic things facing civilization. It saddens me that the destruction of the family unit all began with the destruction of what starts a family – the marriage of a man and a woman.

Dear family, I beseech all of us to remember to stand in the gap for all families in Singapore. Let us unceasingly pray and lovingly reach out to families that need our help to strengthen the wife and husband, who may also be mother and father, in marriage. It’s an important institution that is increasingly being threatened in our society today. Let’s continue to stand up bravely in defense of marriage and family.
