Fuk Lam Church, Hong Kong

Rev. Dr Samuel Lai D. Min (Honorary)
Founder and Senior Pastor of Fuk Lam Church

Mission Statement: To build up a church that is influential in the community and to equip Christ's disciples to fulfil the Great Commission.

The Temple Street area of Yau Ma Tei is densely populated with new immigrants, prostitutes and drug addicts. Poverty, addiction and crime are common denominators for some of these people. Rev. Samuel Lai started Fuk Lam Church to minister to these groups of people in 1988. The vision of Fuk Lam Church is "Temple Street becomes Jesus Street."

The ministries of the church include the weekly distribution of meal-boxes, a drug recovery programme, an annual Christian street carnival, open-air worship and street evangelism in Temple Square, soccer friendship clubs, ministry to the aged, visits to the mainland to encourage believers and English and life-skill classes for migrants.

After 23 years, the vision bestowed by the Lord has not changed for Fuklam Church.

Ministry to the Poor

During the 2011 Winter Solstice, they had a "Poon Choi" Big Bowl Feast with their neighbours (i.e the homeless and the poor). After eating, there came a moment when all the community contacts lifted up pairs of rough and dirty hands worshipping the Lord. They became like children worshipping the Heavenly Father with their pure hearts. These hands were raised up to praise the Lord who gives them life and hope.

God also gave the church members a chance to represent Him as the Loving Father by hugging these "emotional and spiritual orphans".

Every Tuesday evening, workers will deliver meal boxes to their neighbours around Temple Street. Through their ministry, they bring the love of Jesus to those who are living in despair and poverty. They were once rejected by other people but now, they are accepted and affirmed in this family of God's people.

Responding to the Great Commission

Fuklam Church is not only committed to Yau Ma Tei district, which is their Jerusalem. They have also reached out Judea – the two branch churches in Tuen Mun and Kwun Tong. They are also reaching out to mainland China, their Samaria.

In addition to that, they have missionary efforts in 18 countries throughout 5 continents.
