Job Purpose:
Be responsible for assembling recorded raw material into a finished product that’s suitable for broadcasting. The material may include camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics, and special effects. To work closely with the director/producer to achieve the desired end result.
Variety of productions including:
- Commercials
- Corporate training videos
- Short films
- Music videos
- Television programmes
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receiving a brief, and maybe an outline of footage and/or a shot list, script, or screenplay
- Assembling all raw footages, with camera shots either recorded or transcoded in preparation for ingesting into the computer
- Inputting uncut rushes and sound, and synchronising and storing them into files on the computer
- Digitally cutting the files to put together the sequence of the film and deciding what is usable
- Creating a ‘rough cut’ (or assembly edit) of the programme/film and determining the exact cutting for the next and final stages
- Reordering and fine-tuning the content to ensure the logical sequencing and smooth running of the film/video
- Familiarising yourself with the style of specific directors
- Consulting with the director, producer, and/or client throughout the post-production process
- Selecting the most effective shot of a scene in terms of drama, story relevance, or continuity
Additional tasks may include:
- Overseeing the quality and progress of audio and video engineering and editing
- Experimenting with styles and techniques including the design of graphic elements
- Writing voiceover/commentary
- Suggesting or selecting music
You may also carry out online editing duties, which involve finalising technical aspects such as correcting faulty footage, grading and colouring, and adding special effects.
Requirements:
Education/Professional Qualification
- Diploma/Bachelor Degree in the Fine Arts, Film, and Video Production
Preferred Skills/Experience
- A good sense of timing and visual awareness
- A mixture of practical and creative skills
- A high level of attention to detail
- The ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Patience and concentration
- Creativity and the ability to communicate effectively and work well on computers
- Must also have a good eye for detail along with strong visual skills, coordination, and time management skills
Working Conditions:
- Working hours will depend on the production you’re working on
- May work standard office hours or shifts
- Need to be flexible and work at short notice if necessary
- May also work much longer hours to meet project deadlines
- May work over weekend
