It’s Christmas! And during this season, well wishes like “Have a wonderful Christmas!” are commonly heard and shared. But do you know that this greeting is neither trite nor mundane? In fact, it is most biblical. Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV) tells us about this gift from God, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” According to the Hebrew text, there are not just four, but five names here. The name “Wonderful Counselor” is split into two words: “Wonderful” and “Counselor”. Yes, His name is “Wonderful”. And without a doubt, the Messiah, God’s gift, who came to us in the flesh at the first Christmas, is truly wonderful!
Now, let’s consider three truths that surface from this name.
First, our God is a wonderful God. Jesus Christ revealed that our God is a God of blessings. He is good and great! “Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?” (Exodus 15:11, NIV)
Second, He makes our lives wonderful. He has come to bless us and to make our lives a wonder in the eyes of the world. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) declares, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
Third and finally, He uses us to do wonders. Listen to the words of Ephesians 2:10 (NIV), “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Make this Christmas special, and receive Jesus Christ, this wonderful gift from God, into your life today!
