This Little Light of Mine

Ever since we started planning for this conference, one song has been playing in my mind over and over again - “This Little Light of Mine”. I must have learnt this song over 20 years ago while I was still in Sunday School and always thought it was a fun song to sing. Even though it’s classified as a “children’s song”, it has such truth in its lyrics.

This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine!
Everywhere I go,
I’m gonna let it shine!
Out there in the dark,
I’m gonna let it shine!
Let it shine, shine, shine,
Let it shine!

What I really love about this song is it’s not about the size of your light. It’s simply about whether you choose to shine or not. Even the smallest of lights changes its environment and brings illumination to a dark setting. As Francis of Assisi says, “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”

So, conference is over and I’m so glad that you came. We all had a great time being in each other’s company and more importantly, in God’s presence. But what makes me even happier is that you’re going - back to your homes, your schools, your workplaces, your neighbourhoods, and so on. You’re going back to places where the church may not be able to reach, but you can, and you must bring light to wherever you are. The question is, what will you do with the light that God has placed in you?
