Recount, Remember, & Reflect

Merry Christmas! Truly, this is the most wonderful time of the year. The streets are beautifully lit up and there’s just something magical in the air. This Christmas weekend, we wrap up our sermon series through the Fruit of the Spirit. We’re going to talk about love. Not just love as we know it, but the greatest love of all, Jesus Christ.

Amidst all the festivities, there’s something I’d like us to do. Next weekend, we’re gathering for our Thanksgiving Service. This service is an opportunity for us to recount, remember, and reflect on all that’s happened in this past year. The thing about us humans is that we forget. I’m not just talking about forgetting where we left our phones or when’s our wedding anniversary. What I mean is that often we forget the significance of things that have happened. Let’s think back to the Israelites after they had crossed over the Red Sea. God brought them out of slavery and was leading them to an encounter with Him. However, the Israelites grumbled and as a result, they ended up wandering in the wilderness for forty years.

I don’t believe that the Israelites forgot that God had miraculously saved them. Who could forget something like the parting of the Red Sea? I suspect they forgot the significance of what had happened, that God had plans for them. When Joshua became their leader, God wanted them to remember. After crossing the River Jordan in Joshua 4, the Israelites set up memorial stones to serve as a reminder of what God had done for them that day.

This is what I want us to do as a church at this Thanksgiving Service. I want us to put up our own memorial stones to remember all that God had done this past year and collectively thank God. And what’s great is that thanksgiving isn’t just between us and God. Every thanksgiving also serves as a testimony to others. Joshua 4:6 tells us that the memorial stones were to be a sign for future generations to know what God had done. That’s precisely what your thanksgiving is. They are signs that point others to God.

We’re collecting thanksgiving testimonies from across the entire church. If you’ve not sent yours in, tell us your story at www.fcbc.org.sg/mythanksgiving. I believe that as we come together to recount, remember, and reflect over 2017, it will be a great time where God’s name will be proclaimed and praised!
