Unity among the people of God is the key to effective evangelism. Christ prayed for His disciples in John 17:21, “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” Unity in the body of Christ draws attention to show the world that Jesus is Christ! This is effective evangelism. Therefore, unity is key to fulfilling the Great Commission. That is why Paul said in Ephesians 4:3 that we are to be “diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
One of the greatest miracles God has done in Singapore is to birth the LoveSingapore movement. It is a unity movement that brings together the Church of Singapore to pray and seek the fulfilment of God’s destiny for our land. For 25 years, the leadership team has experienced a deep level of unity as we worked together to serve the body of Christ in Singapore. And we’ve seen God’s hand at work within us as we stand together for our nation, just as we’re wearing white this weekend for purity and righteousness.
I have discovered that there are two kinds of unity in the church leadership – Facade unity and Foundational unity. Facade unity is a surface unity. It’s merely skin-deep. When you dig deeper, you’ll find a raw dissonance that can flare up at unexpected times and in unexpected ways, giving rise to divisiveness and dysfunctionalities. On the other hand, Foundational unity is a deep unity. Although there may be some surface disagreements, once you go beneath the surface, you’ll find a bedrock of love and resonance of spirit.
We have learnt that the key to such unity is humility. Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” As we prepare for our next round of 幸福小组 (xing fu xiao zu), let’s stand together humbly and united in Christ so we might experience the mighty move of God in bringing many souls into His kingdom!
